The first, "True Life: I'm Supporting My Family", was one of the most genuinely gutwrenching hours of television I've ever watched. The episode followed two young women who were their families' sole providers. The first, the unfortunately named Unique, was 21. She had given birth to a son at 17, but had made it to college and was living independently at 19, when her mother committed suicide. Unique took in her three younger sisters so that they wouldn't be split up into different foster homes. At the time of filming, the second-oldest sister was pregnant and her boyfriend had moved in. Unique is providing for six (soon to be seven) people. She works days at a customer service job and nights at a strip club (she did do the most impressive pole trick I have ever seen). Throughout the entire episode, she never complained or felt sorry for herself, but frequently castigated herself for not being able to do more for her family. At one point, a guy she liked called her and she completely dorked out, and it was so heartbreaking to see her be, for one minute, a normal 21 year old. The other woman, Gina, was 23 and taking care of her two disabled parents and her three younger siblings. She was suffering from insomnia and was eventually hospitalized for severe panic attacks. Both women were incredibly smart, mature, and focused, but just had no visible options. It was one of the most upsetting things I've ever seen on television and I hope fervently that incredible things happen for both of them as a result of being on the show.
